Current Tribal Consultations

Buy Indian Act

The Indian Affairs Office of Acquisition and Property Management (OAPM) will conduct tribal consultation with federally recognized tribes on April 26, 28 and 30, 2010 on draft regulations to implement the Buy Indian Act (25 U.S.C. 47).  The Act provides authority to set aside procurement contracts for qualified Indian-owned businesses.  Click here to download the following documents:

Nominations for Tribal Consultation Team

The Department of the Interior is requesting nominations from the federally recognized tribes of tribal officials or delegates from their Bureau of Indian Affairs region for the Department’s Tribal Consultation Team, which will draft the Department’s tribal consultation policy in accordance with its plan of actions to implement the President’s Memorandum of November 5, 2009, and Executive Order 13175.  Click here to download the following documents:

The deadline for submitting nominations to the BIA Regional Directors is April 30, 2010.  The nominations should be sent to the BIA Regional Director appropriate to the submitting tribe at his or her Regional Office address.


Development of Department-Wide Tribal Consultation Policy

The Department of the Interior is holding tribal consultation sessions in December 2009 and January 2010 on developing a department-wide tribal consultation policy. For more information, click here to download the following documents:

Carcieri v. Salazar

Department of the Interior to Hold Consultation Sessions on Carcieri v. Salazar Decision The U.S. Supreme Court issued an opinion interpreting a provision of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 (“IRA”) that impacts the authority of the Secretary of the Interior to take land into trust for Tribes. See. Carceri v. Salazar, 129 S. Ct. 1058; 172 L. Ed. 2d. 791 ___U.S. ___ (February 29, 2009).

In keeping with Interior’s commitment on government-to-government consultation, we invite you to attend one or both of the consultation sessions on the subject.
